Apple published a fresh study on the economic impact of its App Store ecosystem in India, which was carried out by Professor Viswanath Pingali of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. Apple claims that developer billings and sales in India were assisted by the App Store to the tune of Rs. 44,447 crores ($5.31 billion).
Notably, developers and companies of all sizes received over 94 percent of that revenue directly, with Apple receiving no compensation.
"We are ecstatic to support the work of developers in India and around the world, as the App Store has been an economic miracle for them.
The strength of India's extraordinarily thriving app economy is highlighted by this study. And as developers of all sizes create apps that have a significant impact and improve people's lives, we are determined to keep investing in their success," stated Tim Cook, CEO of Apple.
Since the App Store's launch 15 years ago, Indian developers have discovered more ways to monetize their apps across categories like games, health and fitness, lifestyle, and utilities, fostering a vibrant and healthy ecosystem, according to the study "The Apple Ecosystem in India: Its Value to Developers and Users."
The research also notes that 87 percent of Indian developers were active on numerous storefronts, and that customers outside of India accounted for roughly 80 percent of developers' revenue in 2024.
More than 755 million Indian-developed applications were downloaded in 2024, which is twice as many as there were five years prior. Additionally, Indian-developed apps were in the top 100 most downloaded apps across 70 stores outside of India.
In a similar vein, small developers' overall App Store profits increased by 74 percent in India between 2021 and 2024 thanks to programs like the App Store Small Business Program, which lowers commission rates to support small developers' growth.
Apple has established a Developer Center in Bengaluru to further accelerate this momentum by offering training, practical support, and access to more than 250,000 APIs using frameworks like HealthKit, Metal, and Core ML.
Apple stopped more than $7 billion in potentially fraudulent transactions between 2020 and 2023, including $1.8 billion in 2023 alone. Additionally, Apple turned down over 1.7 million software submissions because they did not live up to its strict privacy, security, and quality requirements.
