Bhutan’s Green Digital Pvt. Ltd has signed a long-term power purchase agreement with Reliance Power. Green Digital is a part of Druk Holding and Investments Ltd (DHI). This deal marks a big step in clean energy cooperation between Bhutan and India. As part of this agreement, Bhutan’s biggest solar power project will be developed. It will be a 500 MW solar plant, built through a joint venture where Reliance Power and DHI will each hold 50% ownership.
The project plans to invest up to ₹2,000 crore and will follow a Build-Own-Operate model. Once completed, it will produce more solar power than Bhutan currently does. This move aims to add more variety to Bhutan’s clean energy mix, which is now mainly based on hydropower. Reliance Power has started the process to find contractors through international bidding to ensure good quality and efficient work. The company is also in talks with banks and other financial institutions to raise long-term funding for the project. The solar plant will be built in stages over the next two years.
This project supports Bhutan’s environmental goals and also helps South Asia move toward more clean energy. It is a key step in building stronger regional ties in power and infrastructure.
The agreement follows an earlier partnership formed in October 2024 between Reliance Enterprises, made up of Reliance Power and Reliance Infrastructure, and DHI. That partnership also includes the 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I hydro project, adding to Bhutan’s energy plans.
This collaboration shows a shared goal of supporting sustainable development and energy security in the region.
