Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently discussed his vision of a future in which artificial intelligence (AI) replaces both blue-collar and white-collar occupations within the next 20 years in a podcast with Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha.
He thinks this move will help with labor shortages and fundamentally alter the way we think about work and play.
According to Gates, developments in AI will lessen the need for human labor in a variety of occupations worldwide.
"Let us say 20 years from now, AI will have changed things enough that just this pure capitalistic framework probably will not explain much because AI both sort of white-collar type work and, as blue-collar workers, the robots will get some good hands and are able to do the physical things the humans do," he said.
Gates stated during the discussion that the world will no longer experience a lack of labor in occupations like medicine, education, or manufacturing when AI develops "awfully good" hands that can perform a wide range of tasks that humans perform.
"There will not be any shortages. Thus, it is a significant shift that will save a great deal of time," he stated.
Gates sees a time when people can take advantage of reduced workweeks and retire early. As AI takes over jobs like food production, manufacturing, and medical diagnostics, he says this will necessitate a fundamental rethink of how time should be spent.
