The National Statistics Office (NSO), operating under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), has revised the schedule for releasing India’s Provisional Estimates (PE) of Annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and fourth-quarter GDP figures.
Under the new timeline, the GDP data, which was traditionally published on the last working day of May, will now be released on June 7 every year. In cases where June 7 falls on a holiday, the data will be announced on the preceding working day.
According to MoSPI, the revision follows consultations with the Advisory Committee on National Accounts Statistics (ACNAS) and is aimed at improving the quality, robustness, and reliability of national accounts data.
The Ministry stated that the change became necessary as several critical datasets used in GDP compilation are available only after a delay of nearly two months. One of the major reasons cited is the timeline followed by listed companies for filing audited financial results. Companies are required to submit their fourth-quarter and annual financial statements within 60 days from the end of the financial year, leading many firms to file close to the May 31 deadline.
MoSPI also pointed out that important fiscal indicators related to Central Government accounts — including revenue expenditure, capital expenditure, taxes, subsidies, and interest payments for March — are finalized only after a two-month gap, making additional time necessary for accurate compilation.
As per the revised release calendar, the Provisional Estimates of GDP for FY2025-26 along with GDP estimates for the January-March quarter of 2025-26 will now be published on June 5, 2026.
The Ministry said the move forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the coverage and reliability of India’s national accounts statistics while aligning the country’s statistical practices with international standards and global best practices.
