Government Pushes Ahead with GST 2.0 Reforms, Finance Minister Meets Industry Leaders

By Global Consultants Review Team Wednesday, 28 May 2025

The government is stepping up efforts to roll out the next phase of GST reforms, known as GST 2.0. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman held an important meeting today with top business leaders to hear their thoughts and expectations on the upcoming changes to the Goods and Services Tax system.

According to government sources, the meeting featured presentations from various industry representatives and included senior officials from the Finance Ministry, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, and Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran. The key goal of the discussions is to gather useful suggestions and build support from different states for a smoother and more unified tax system across the country.

One of the major changes being considered is to simplify the current GST rate structure. The government is looking at removing the 12% tax rate and shifting to a three-rate system of 5%, 18%, and 28%, instead of the existing four rates. Officials believe this will lead to fewer legal disputes, better tax compliance, and possibly boost demand for goods and services.

A senior official said that the government is focused on making GST simpler and more business-friendly, while still making sure that enough tax revenue is collected to support public spending. Economists also support this move, saying that changes to indirect taxes like GST have a stronger effect on people’s spending habits than income taxes do. Another important part of the reform is resolving ongoing issues around how products, especially food items, are classified under GST. These classification problems have caused many legal fights and confusion, leading to loss of revenue. The government now wants to make the rules clearer and more consistent to avoid such problems in the future.

Since GST was introduced in July 2017, it has become a major part of India’s tax system. But issues around its complexity and how it’s applied have remained a challenge. With GST 2.0, the government hopes to fix these problems and make the tax system work better for businesses and consumers alike.
