India has reached a major milestone in its renewable energy journey by achieving 125 GW of installed solar power capacity, making it the third-largest solar energy producer in the world. The announcement was made by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, during the inaugural session of the 8th International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, from October 27 to 30, 2025.

Speaking at the event, Joshi highlighted that India achieved its renewable energy targets five years ahead of schedule. Today, more than 50 percent of the country’s total installed power capacity comes from non-fossil fuel sources, showcasing the government’s strong commitment to clean and sustainable energy.

Joshi emphasized that the country’s success story is not just about numbers, but about real change at the grassroots level. He said decentralized solar energy is transforming lives by bringing light to rural homes, powering health centres, and supporting farmers with better tools and technology. Under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar – Free Electricity Scheme, over 20 lakh households have already benefited from solar energy.

He also spoke about the progress of the PM-KUSUM scheme, which focuses on expanding solar use in agriculture by setting up small solar plants, promoting off-grid solar pumps, and connecting existing agricultural pumps to solar power. These initiatives are ensuring that clean energy reaches even the most remote corners of the country.

Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary of the Ministry, noted that India also ranks fourth in wind energy and is now the third-largest country in overall renewable energy installations. He added that India is also the second-largest manufacturer of solar modules after China. ISA Director General Ashish Khanna stressed that the world is at a turning point, with renewable energy capacity growing faster than ever before.
