Negotiations between India and the European Union (EU) on the proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) resumed in New Delhi on Monday, marking a significant step toward establishing a comprehensive and balanced trade partnership. The latest round of talks, scheduled from November 3 to 7, brings together senior representatives from both sides to address pending issues and strengthen economic ties.

According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, discussions are focused on key areas such as trade in goods and services, rules of origin, and other technical and institutional matters. The goal is to shape a “modern, robust, and future-ready” FTA that reflects the evolving trade priorities of both India and the EU.

This renewed engagement follows Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit to Brussels on October 27–28, where he met Maroš Šefčovič, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security. During their meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating negotiations and achieving a comprehensive, mutually beneficial agreement.

The talks have gained momentum after a virtual meeting on November 3 involving Mr. Goyal, Mr. Šefčovič, and EU Agriculture and Food Commissioner Christophe Hansen. To further advance discussions, Sabine Weyand, Director-General for Trade at the European Commission, is visiting New Delhi from November 5 to 6 for high-level consultations with Commerce Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal.

The Ministry emphasized that the visit underscores the shared determination of India and the EU to finalize a fair and equitable trade pact. The proposed FTA is expected to enhance trade, investment, and innovation between the two regions, while supporting sustainable and inclusive economic growth. Both sides are working toward a framework that fosters long-term cooperation and global competitiveness.
