India is on track to secure 10 percent of global green hydrogen demand by 2030, Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power Shripad Y. Naik announced at the 3rd International Conference on Green Hydrogen (ICGH 2025) in New Delhi. He said India’s clean energy transition, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Panchamrit pledges at COP-26, is among the fastest in the world.

Naik highlighted that India’s non-fossil-fuel-based power capacity has reached 260 GW, driven primarily by solar and wind energy. This robust renewable base, he said, is powering the country’s “Green Hydrogen Revolution,” enabling the creation of clean molecules to decarbonise heavy industries and transportation.

The Minister noted that India’s green hydrogen market is projected to grow at a rapid annual rate of 20–40 percent over the next decade, positioning the country as a major global hub for hydrogen production, trade, and technology. Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), launched in January 2023, the government has allocated ₹17,000 crore to incentivise hydrogen production and electrolyser manufacturing. So far, projects have been awarded for 3,000 MW per year of electrolyser capacity and 8.62 lakh metric tonnes per year of green hydrogen output. Competitive pricing has also been achieved for 7.24 lakh MTPA of green ammonia for fertiliser production and 20,000 MTPA of green hydrogen for refinery use by IOCL, BPCL, and HPCL.

Union Minister for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh said the mission reflects a whole-of-government approach, integrating scientific and industrial initiatives to advance clean technologies. He emphasised that India’s strategic focus - from biotechnology and biofuels to hydrogen and electric mobility—supports the nation’s broader goal of achieving a self-reliant, globally competitive hydrogen economy by 2047.

Senior officials at the conference underscored India’s growing hydrogen ecosystem, with discussions centred on developing hydrogen hubs, integrating production with industrial clusters, and boosting blended finance to scale adoption.
