India Reaches 100 GW Solar PV Manufacturing Milestone, Strengthening Atmanirbhar Bharat and Clean Energy Goals

India has achieved a major clean energy milestone by crossing 100 GW in solar photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturing capacity under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM). This marks a dramatic rise from just 2.3 GW in 2014, reflecting the country's strong push toward building a self-reliant, world-class solar manufacturing ecosystem in line with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the achievement, highlighting it as a symbol of India’s growing manufacturing strength and leadership in clean energy. Responding to Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi’s post on X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister said, “This is yet another milestone towards self-reliance! It depicts the success of India’s manufacturing capabilities and our efforts towards popularising clean energy.”

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi credited the progress to PM Modi’s visionary leadership and impactful initiatives, including the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar Modules. He emphasized that this milestone is a key step toward India’s goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030 and supporting global decarbonization efforts.

The ALMM Order, introduced by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in January 2019, initially listed 8.2 GW of capacity in March 2021. In just over four years, that figure has grown more than twelvefold, driven by 100 manufacturers operating 123 production units, up from just 21 units in 2021. This growth has been fueled by both established industry players and new entrants, many adopting high-efficiency technologies and vertically integrated processes to meet domestic and global demand.

This achievement is a testament to India’s strategic focus on clean energy and self-reliant manufacturing, supported by initiatives like the PLI Scheme and policies aimed at creating a level playing field for Indian manufacturers.
