India is rapidly becoming a major centre for pharmaceuticals and medical research, according to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Speaking at the 7th International Conference of the Innovative Physicians Forum (IPF Medicon 2025) in New Delhi, Birla said India’s strong healthcare ecosystem has helped it grow into a global leader in drug manufacturing, vaccine production, and biomedical innovation.

He pointed out how Indian doctors, scientists, and healthcare workers earned worldwide praise during the COVID-19 pandemic by showing skill and creativity even with limited resources. Birla also noted that alongside New Delhi’s efforts to build a healthcare system that is high-quality, affordable, and accessible, foreign investors are showing great trust in India’s life sciences sector.

Between April and December 2024, India’s pharma and medical device industries attracted over Rs 11,888 crore in Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) and another Rs 7,246 crore through brownfield investments. This shows how global investors are backing India’s healthcare and pharmaceutical growth story.

Birla also spoke about key government programs such as Ayushman Bharat and the National Digital Health Mission, which are helping to make healthcare more fair and widely available. These initiatives, together with strong research efforts, are shaping a future where India’s healthcare and pharmaceutical industries will play a major role in the global economy.

With exports on the rise, better infrastructure, and new global partnerships, India is emerging as a top choice for pharmaceutical development and cutting-edge medical research.
