India Targets Manufacturing Boom: 25% GDP, 100M Jobs by 2035

India has unveiled an ambitious vision to transform its manufacturing sector into a global powerhouse, aiming for it to contribute over 25% of the nation’s GDP and generate more than 100 million jobs by 2035. The plan was presented through NITI Aayog’s Frontier Tech Hub roadmap titled “Reimagining Manufacturing: India’s Roadmap to Global Leadership in Advanced Manufacturing.”

The roadmap lays out a decade-long strategy to position India among the world’s top three advanced manufacturing hubs, aligning with the government’s Viksit Bharat @ 2047 vision. It focuses on harnessing frontier technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Advanced Materials, Robotics, and Digital Twins to strengthen competitiveness across 13 priority sectors.

At the launch event, attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, NITI Aayog CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, and other senior leaders, speakers underscored the urgency of transforming India’s industrial base. The roadmap emphasizes coordinated efforts to bolster R&D ecosystems, enhance industrial infrastructure, upskill the workforce, and scale technology adoption.

Chief Minister Fadnavis highlighted Maharashtra’s role in leading the shift, noting that exponential growth requires moving beyond “business-as-usual.” He pledged that Maharashtra would be the first state to align fully with the National Mission on Manufacturing, setting the stage to become a global hub for advanced manufacturing.

Echoing this sentiment, NITI Aayog CEO Subrahmanyam stated, “Incremental change will not suffice. This roadmap charts a decisive, time-bound course to make India an Advanced Manufacturing Powerhouse by 2035.”

Developed in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Deloitte, the roadmap also cautions that failure to adopt frontier technologies could cost India up to US$270 billion in manufacturing GDP by 2035 and US$1 trillion by 2047—making timely action imperative.
