Intel has promoted Sachin Katti, head of networking chips, to chief technology officer and AI chief. The promotion comes at a time when Intel's new CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, is restructuring the company's leadership team.
Before joining Intel, Katti founded Uhana, a startup that brought real-time AI to mobile networks and was acquired by VMware.
Katti was Intel's SVP and General Manager of the Network and Edge Group. In this role, he oversaw initiatives to improve product excellence in network infrastructure and intelligent edge solutions.
The Belagavi boy, who was born into a doctor's family, now lives in the United States with his wife, Seema, and two children. Katti graduated from IIT-Bombay in 2003 and went on to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned his MS and PhD.
"One of our school principals inspired a number of students to pursue higher education at IITs, and Sachin set his sights on this goal while still in sixth grade. He is also a cricket and football fan," his brother Amit Katti, a urologist, told.
Katti co-founded Kumu Networks, a company that specialized in advanced full-duplex radio technology, more than a decade ago. He and his graduate students demonstrated the feasibility of implementing duplex radios, which can transmit and receive signals on the same frequencies. Katti built the world's first commercial full-duplex radios and raised $45 million.
Uhana, which he later founded, specialized in integrating deep learning and real-time AI into carrier networks and applications to improve performance through optimisation.
His most recent research focuses on ML-EXray, which provides visibility and automated operations for machine learning applications deployed at the edge. The system streamlines operational processes and provides comprehensive monitoring capabilities for edge-based ML implementations. An email sent to Katti regarding his elevation received no response until the time of publication.
Outside of work, Katti tries to visit his hometown once a year. "He loves rotti, jhunka (gram flour porridge), and misal pav," his brother Amit added.
