Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with his Mauritian counterpart, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, in Varanasi on Thursday, marking a significant moment in the deepening of India-Mauritius relations. The visit by Dr. Ramgoolam is part of his ongoing 8-day tour to India, from September 9 to 16, aimed at boosting bilateral cooperation and cultural ties.
Upon his arrival in Varanasi, Prime Minister Modi was welcomed by Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He later held a joint press conference with Prime Minister Ramgoolam, where both leaders highlighted the deep-rooted historical, cultural, and spiritual connections between the two nations.
Addressing the press, PM Modi emphasized that the relationship between India and Mauritius is not just diplomatic but familial. “Like the uninterrupted flow of Mother Ganga in Kashi, the continuous flow of Indian culture has enriched Mauritius for centuries. Welcoming our Mauritian friends in Kashi today is not just a formal meeting, but a spiritual reunion,” Modi said.
Dr. Ramgoolam also held discussions with India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, where they reviewed the multi-faceted bilateral partnership. The talks reinforced both nations’ commitment to enhancing cooperation in areas including culture, economy, and maritime security.
Mauritius is a key maritime neighbor in the Indian Ocean and a vital partner in India’s “Security and Growth for All in the Region” (SAGAR) vision and its “Neighborhood First” policy. The leaders agreed that stronger ties are essential not only for mutual prosperity but also for fulfilling the collective aspirations of the Global South. The visit reflects India’s long-standing cultural and strategic relationship with Mauritius, rooted in shared history and strong people-to-people connections.
