PM Modi Arrives in Canada for G7 Summit Focused on Global Security and Innovation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Calgary, Canada, to take part in the G7 Summit being held at Kananaskis. He is joining world leaders to discuss key global issues, including energy security, technology, and innovation. This year’s summit is drawing special attention due to the ongoing conflicts between Israel and Iran, as well as Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky will attend the summit as a guest.

In a surprise development, U.S. President Donald Trump will leave the summit one day early to attend to what the White House called “important matters.” This announcement came shortly after President Trump chose not to support peace efforts between Israel and Iran.

PM Modi is on a three-nation tour and arrived in Canada from Cyprus on Monday evening, local time. He is attending the summit at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. This is Modi’s sixth time at the G7 Summit, which is being held from June 16 to 17.

At the summit, PM Modi will share India’s views with the leaders of the G7 countries and other invited nations. He is expected to talk about key topics like energy and technology, with a special focus on the link between artificial intelligence and energy, as well as new advances in quantum technology. These issues were highlighted earlier by India’s Ministry of External Affairs. The Outreach Summit will revolve around three themes: global safety, building energy security with digital growth, and strengthening future partnerships.

This G7 meeting is also Modi’s first major global event after India’s recent Operation Sindoor. That military operation targeted terrorist camps in Pakistan after a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 people, including many tourists. During the summit, PM Modi is also expected to hold talks with several world leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Carney.

Carney’s invitation to Modi signals a fresh start in India-Canada relations, which had been tense due to the killing of pro-Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Last year, India recalled its top diplomats after Canada linked Indian officials to the incident. Canada responded by expelling Indian diplomats as well.

Since Carney took over as Prime Minister in March, India has expressed hope for better ties with Canada. Talks between security officials from both countries have resumed, and there are discussions about appointing new high commissioners.

On June 12, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the country is exploring ways to improve its relationship with Canada. The G7 Summit will provide an important opportunity for both nations to exchange views on key global and bilateral issues. During PM Modi’s earlier visit to Canada in 2015, the two countries upgraded their relationship to a strategic partnership.
