On the occasion of Navratri, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation through a heartfelt letter, urging citizens to celebrate the newly launched GST Bachat Utsav and embrace Swadeshi (indigenous) products. The Prime Minister highlighted that the new phase of GST reforms, rolled out on September 22, is a historic step towards simplifying taxation, reducing costs, and strengthening India's economic foundation.
Under the revamped GST structure, tax rates have now been simplified into just two slabs — 5 percent and 18 percent. Essential items such as food, medicines, soaps, toothpaste, and insurance will either be tax-free or fall under the lowest 5 percent category. Many items previously taxed at 12 percent have been moved to the 5 percent bracket, significantly lowering consumer expenses.
“These reforms will increase your savings and make it easier to fulfill your dreams, whether it’s buying a home, a car, or planning a family holiday,” PM Modi said in his letter.
The Prime Minister praised shopkeepers and traders who are displaying “Before and Now” price boards to showcase the benefits of tax reductions. He emphasized that the simplified tax system and reduced rates will particularly benefit farmers, women, youth, MSMEs, and the middle class, making business easier and boosting self-reliance.
Linking the reforms to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 (Developed India 2047), PM Modi urged everyone to proudly use and promote Indian-made products. “Let us proudly say, what we buy is indigenous, what we sell is indigenous.” He also appealed to state governments to foster a better investment climate and support industrial growth.
Concluding his message, the Prime Minister wished everyone a joyous Navratri, hoping the GST Savings Festival brings prosperity, savings, and happiness to every Indian household.
