ReNew Power, a leading clean energy company, is planning to invest ₹22,000 crore to build India’s biggest renewable energy project in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. This marks ReNew’s return to the state after five years. The company will set up a large solar power plant with a capacity of 1,800 megawatts (MW), a wind power plant of 1,000 MW, and a battery energy storage system (BESS) of 2 gigawatt-hours (GWh). The project will be built in two phases.
As part of the project, ReNew will also build a 100-kilometre-long high-voltage line to carry the electricity produced to other areas. The foundation stone for the project will be laid on May 16, and Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh is expected to attend the event.
In the first phase, ReNew will build a 587 MW solar power plant, a 250.8 MW wind power plant, and a 415 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery system. The rest of the work will be done in the second phase.
This project will be the biggest of its kind in India. The Andhra Pradesh government approved it under the new clean energy policy launched in October 2024. ReNew had earlier paused its activities in the state after the government in 2019 reviewed and changed old electricity price agreements with renewable energy companies. That decision had put around 5,200 MW of solar and wind projects at risk.
