Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam Join Hands to Boost Clean Energy Trade in Southeast Asia

In a big step toward greener energy in Southeast Asia, companies from Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam have signed a new deal to work together on exporting clean electricity across the region. This agreement supports the long-standing goal of building the ASEAN Power Grid, a network that connects electricity across member countries.

This partnership brings together two major energy groups. From Malaysia, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) have teamed up as the MY Energy Consortium. On the other side, PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC) from Vietnam and Singapore’s Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd are working together. The new Joint Development Agreement focuses on using renewable energy produced in Vietnam and sending it to Malaysia and Singapore through an underwater power cable. The Peninsular Malaysia National Grid will help support this connection. The project also plans to add energy storage and more clean power sources to make sure the electricity supply stays steady.

Leaders from Malaysia’s MY Energy Consortium expressed their excitement. TNB’s CEO, Datuk Ir. Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan, and PETRONAS CEO Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik said Malaysia is proud to play a key role in this regional effort. They added that it will not only improve energy security in the area but also help Malaysia become a center for power distribution.

Vietnam sees this project as a chance to grow its economy, create jobs, and follow a greener path, especially since the country has made offshore wind power one of its top priorities. Singapore, which will be receiving much of this clean energy, hopes to import up to 6 gigawatts of low-carbon electricity by 2035. Wong Kim Yin, CEO of Sembcorp Industries, said the deal shows Singapore’s important part in supporting cross-border clean energy trade and helping the country meet its climate goals.

This new partnership is a major step toward a cleaner and more connected energy future in Southeast Asia. It brings countries together to share resources, build strong infrastructure, and move forward with policies that support clean and reliable energy for the region.
