In a recent high-level meeting, US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau spoke with Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to boost cooperation between the two countries. A main topic was fair access to each other’s markets, which is an important part of ongoing trade talks between the US and India. State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said that Landau stressed how equal trade terms would help both countries grow economically. These discussions come as both sides are said to be nearing an agreement that has been in the works for a long time.
The idea of balanced market access has been a long-standing US request. It reflects past US trade goals, including those pushed by former President Donald Trump, who focused on fairness in global trade, including with countries like China, Japan, the EU, and India.
Earlier this week, a senior U.S. official stated that a trade deal with India may be reached soon. India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal was recently in Washington to meet with key US officials, including Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
Besides trade, Landau also spoke about illegal immigration and drug trafficking. Although no specific cases were mentioned, past events were discussed, especially situations where Indians trying to enter the US illegally were later sent back. Some of these deportations caused concern after videos showed people being flown out while wearing restraints.
Both countries reiterated their commitment to collaborate on maintaining peace and security in the region. This shows the growing trust and teamwork between the world’s two largest democracies.
If the trade talks succeed and cooperation grows in other areas, this could mark a stronger and more balanced partnership between the US and India.
