World Patient Safety Day 2026 Highlights Safer NCD Care

World Patient Safety Day is being observed today (17th - Sep - 2026) with a global focus on making healthcare safer for people living with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has selected “Safe care for noncommunicable diseases” as the theme for 2026, under the slogan “Safe care for life!”

The focus comes as people living with chronic diseases often require healthcare support over many years, increasing their exposure to potential safety risks.

WHO states that around one in 10 patients is harmed during healthcare globally, with approximately half of this harm considered preventable.

For people managing long-term conditions, risks can emerge during diagnosis, medication, treatment, follow-up and coordination between different healthcare providers.

Healthcare Systems Under Greater Safety Pressure

This year's campaign highlights the need to strengthen safety throughout the entire patient journey rather than concentrating only on individual hospital visits.

WHO identifies fragmented care, medication errors, diagnostic delays, healthcare-associated infections and other system-level challenges as potential sources of preventable harm.

The organization is calling for stronger health systems, better coordination and meaningful involvement of patients in decisions affecting their care.

Healthcare organizations are also highlighting the importance of maintaining safety throughout long-term treatment.

Conjoint Professor Anne Duggan, CEO of the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, said :

“This theme is a powerful reminder that patient safety is not confined to a single appointment, hospital stay or treatment decision.”

She noted that for people living with cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory disease, safety can depend on every stage of care, including communication, handovers, medication changes, test results and follow-up.

Role of Healthcare Consulting

The focus on safer long-term care is also creating opportunities for healthcare consulting firms to support organizations in strengthening their operating systems.

Consultants can work with hospitals and healthcare providers on areas such as patient-safety frameworks, risk management, care coordination, digital health systems, process improvement and data-driven quality management.

WHO itself identifies leadership, organizational processes, data, technology and skilled healthcare professionals as important components of safer care.

The growing use of artificial intelligence is another area requiring careful management.

Current healthcare discussions around patient safety are emphasizing that AI tools can support diagnosis, data analysis and clinical processes, but their use requires appropriate professional oversight and safeguards.

Global Push for Safer Care

World Patient Safety Day 2026 is also being marked through awareness events and public campaigns worldwide.

WHO has encouraged landmarks and public spaces to be illuminated in orange to highlight the global commitment to safer care. The WHO will illuminate Geneva's Jet d'Eau as part of the campaign.

As healthcare systems manage increasingly complex long-term conditions, the 2026 campaign places patient safety at the centre of healthcare delivery.

For healthcare providers and consulting firms, the emphasis is increasingly on building systems that reduce preventable harm while improving coordination, quality and continuity of care.
