After Starlink, Another US Company Eyes Satellite Internet Launch in India

By Global Consultants Review Team Thursday, 10 April 2025

Following Elon Musk's Starlink, Apple's satellite communications partner, Globalstar, has expressed interest in launching its services in India, a significant development that promises to boost the country's satellite internet market. Notably, Elon Musk won't be the only one using Starlink to deliver satellite internet to India if the Modi administration gives its approval.Globalstar might join this market as well.

Aside from these two, companies such as OneWeb, Project Kuiper, and Orbit Connect have requested permission to launch satellite internet services in India.

Globalstar submits an application to the government

According to the report, Globalstar's internet terminals are in low Earth orbit. Globalstar has filed an application with the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe) to begin operations.

The company may also apply to the Department of Telecommunications for a GMPCS license, which is required to launch satellite internet services. The company will not be able to launch satellite internet in India until it receives approvals from both agencies.

Globalstar Has Obtained Test Spectrum

Globalstar has already received test spectrum from the Department of Telecommunications to demonstrate the use of satellite-based disaster management. To put it simply, the company uses satellite internet for disaster management-related activities. Now it requires a commercial license. Only after obtaining a commercial license can the general public gain access to satellite internet services.

Apple and Globalstar Work Together

Apple and Globalstar are currently working together. Globalstar offers direct-to-cell satellite internet services to iPhone users. This means that satellite calls are used to contact emergency services. Apple collaborated with Globalstar in 2022. This support is currently available for Apple users in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and a few other countries. India is not included on this list.
