BCG India Chairman Janmejaya Sinha Joins RBI Central Board

The Government of India has appointed Janmejaya Kumar Sinha, Chairman of Boston Consulting Group (BCG) India, as a part-time, non-official director on the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a four-year term.

The appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) following a proposal from the Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance. Sinha is among three new part-time, non-official directors appointed to the RBI Central Board, alongside former Finance Ministry Special Secretary Annie George Mathew and former diplomat Syed Akbaruddin.

The appointment brings a senior management consulting perspective to India's central banking institution at a time when financial-sector transformation, economic development and institutional governance remain important areas for businesses and policymakers.

Janmejaya Sinha Brings Decades of Consulting Experience

Janmejaya Kumar Sinha is Managing Director & Senior Partner and Chairman, India, at Boston Consulting Group. He joined BCG in 1998 and has worked with clients across several markets on strategy, business transformation, governance, organizational change and operations turnaround.

His consulting experience also covers financial institutions, economic development, corporate finance and strategy, leadership development and business transformation. These areas closely connect with several of the issues faced by India's financial and corporate sectors.

Before becoming Chairman of BCG India, Sinha served as Chairman of BCG's Asia-Pacific region from 2009 to 2018 and was a member of the firm's Executive Committee from 2006 to 2018.

Sinha's association with India's financial system also predates his BCG career. According to BCG, he worked with the Reserve Bank of India before joining the consulting firm. He has also served on committees established by the Government of India, RBI and the Indian Banks' Association.

From Management Consulting to Central Banking

Sinha's appointment creates a notable link between management consulting and financial-sector governance.

As Chairman of BCG India, Sinha has advised organizations on large-scale transformation, strategy and governance. His experience with financial institutions and economic development adds further relevance to his new role on the RBI Central Board.

His previous work with the RBI also gives the appointment an additional dimension. Sinha is returning to an institution with which he has been associated professionally, this time as a member of its Central Board.

The RBI Central Board is responsible for the overall direction and governance of the central bank. Bringing professionals with experience across consulting, public finance, diplomacy and economic policy broadens the range of perspectives available to the board.

Sinha's Perspective on India's Business Environment

Sinha has also shared his views on India's business environment and the need for senior leaders to give the country sufficient strategic attention.

“India will take the CEO time, and if the CEO is not willing to give India time, then India will frustrate the company and the CEO.” -  Janmejaya Sinha,Chairman India, Boston Consulting Group

The remark was published by BCG in its 2024 “The CEO's Guide to India” and reflects Sinha's view that India requires sustained leadership attention from businesses operating in the country.

In the same BCG publication, Sinha also highlighted the complexity of India's business environment across its states and the importance of building the organizational capabilities needed to work effectively across different markets.

Experience Across Government and Financial Institutions

Sinha's professional experience extends beyond traditional management consulting assignments.

BCG states that he has participated in various committees established by the Government of India, Reserve Bank of India and Indian Banks' Association. He has also chaired the Confederation of Indian Industry's Committee on Financial Inclusion and Fintech and participated in work related to India's digital payments ecosystem.

This background makes his appointment particularly relevant to discussions around financial inclusion, digital payments, economic development and transformation within India's financial system.

His experience also includes advising organizations on governance and transformation, areas that have become increasingly important as financial institutions respond to changing customer expectations, technology adoption and regulatory requirements.

What the Appointment Means for India's Consulting Sector

Sinha's move into the RBI Central Board highlights the wider role that senior consulting professionals can play beyond corporate advisory assignments.

Management consultants increasingly work across areas that involve business strategy, financial institutions, economic development, organizational transformation and public-sector initiatives. Sinha's career reflects this broader intersection between consulting expertise and institutional decision-making.

For Boston Consulting Group India, the appointment also places one of its senior leaders in an important national governance role. For the wider consulting community, it demonstrates the value of experience gained through advising businesses, financial institutions and public-sector organizations.

The appointment also comes as India continues to focus on strengthening its financial ecosystem, expanding digital financial services and supporting long-term economic growth.

A Four-Year Term on the RBI Central Board

Sinha will serve as a part-time, non-official director of the RBI Central Board for four years. His appointment, along with those of Annie George Mathew and Syed Akbaruddin, expands the board's pool of external expertise.

For the consulting industry, the development is significant because it brings the experience of a leading management consultant into one of India's most important financial institutions.

Sinha's combination of management consulting, financial-sector experience, economic development and institutional advisory work makes the appointment a notable development at the intersection of India's consulting and financial-policy landscape.
